1. Have Your Well Pump Inspected Every 6 Months

2. Keep Your System Clean (and Bug-Free)

Many well pump owners know the trouble that ants and other small bugs bring to their system. Ants and bugs eat away at the copper wiring in your system, causing your electricity bills to skyrocket.

There are simple things you can do to prevent a potentially costly system failure as a result of bugs. Every month, take five minutes or so to check your system for loose wiring, signs of bugs, or leaks.

Another thing you can do is add moth balls inside your pressure switch, which prevents unwanted critters from making their new home there. You can also spray lube in the base of the pressure switch (we recommend Liquid Wrench) to keep the base slippery.

3. Keep Air Charge In Your Tank Set to the Appropriate Pressure

The air bladder in your tank is essential for ensuring maximum efficiency in your system. If you notice that your system is pumping for longer than a minute, that may be a sign that your pressure isn’t set quite right.

The water bladder is set slightly below whatever the low pressure of the system is. For example, if you have a 20-40 PSI system the air bladder should be set to approximately 17 or 18 PSI. This makes sure your pump is only kicking on when it absolutely needs to, keeping your system running at optimal efficiency. You can use a standard tire pressure gauge to check the pressure in your tank on a regular basis.
