Don’t let the name reverse osmosis system intimidate you – it is actually just a simple and direct water filtration process. It has been used to convert seawater to drinking water using high-pressure pumps (water desalination process).

Basic Components of an ROFS

Cold Water Line Valve: The water source for the RO system.
Pre-Filter(s): Water from the supply line enters the pre-filter first. There may be more than one pre-filters used.
Reverse Osmosis Membrane: The heart of the system. The most commonly used is a spiral wound.
Post filter(s): From the RO storage tank before going to the RO faucet, the product water goes through the post filter(s).
Automatic Shut-Off Valve: This valve block water from further entering the membrane. It stops the water production and stops water from flowing to the drain in order to conserve water.
Check Valve: The check valve controls the backward flow of product water which could rupture the membrane.
Flow Restrictor: Regulates the flow of water through the membrane. This control enables the system to get the highest quality drinking water.
Storage Tank: Where the filtered water is stored. The pressurized tank can hold up to 2.5 gallons of water.
Faucet: The RO unit has its own faucet which is typically installed in the kitchen sink.
Drain Line: Used to discard the impurities removed from the tap water.

These are usually the same components for every brand and model.

How a Reverse Osmosis Filter System Works

A reverse osmosis membrane is able to remove very minute impurities and particles, leaving water that is safe to drink. In the household, the ROFS removes dissolved impurities in the water by putting the tap water through a membrane which allows water to pass, but not the solids or the impurities. The solids and impurities are separated and washed out down the drain.

Reverse osmosis filter systems may look alike because they have the same basic components and they all function the same way. The difference lies in the quality of their reverse osmosis water filters and membranes. Higher-quality filters and membranes can filter smaller particles. This difference has a major effect on the quality of the water produced by the system. Fewer impurities are produced by better water filtration systems.
