Many of our customers are concerned about the use of chemicals in their water treatment systems. The good news is that when it comes to water treatment for your home or business, you have options!

Most water treatment systems are designed to take out harmful minerals, bacteria, contaminants, and sediment using a variety of methods. While a common problem, hard water, can only be addressed with water softening, the other contaminants can be removed through chemical means such as chlorine.

Some customers have asked us if there is another way to remove these contaminants without the use of chlorine, and we’re happy to say that there is! There are several chemical-free water treatment solutions that we offer, which we’ll explain more in this blog about how they work and the options you have.

What is Chemical Free Water Treatment?

Chemical-free water treatment is a method of treating your water without the use of chlorine, powders, emulsions, biocides, or other disinfectants. While these methods are considered generally safe for water treatment, if you have concerns about these chemical options, there are other water treatment methods that don’t involve the use of chemicals.

Chemical-free water treatment won’t necessarily address issues like hard water, as stated before, but these methods will effectively remove other contaminants from your water that would normally be addressed with the use of chemicals.

What are Some Chemical-Free Water Treatment Options?

UV Lights

Ultraviolet water purification is the most effective method for disinfecting bacteria from the water without chemicals. Ultraviolet (UV) rays penetrate harmful pathogens in your home’s water and destroy illness-causing microorganisms by attacking their genetic core (DNA). This is extremely efficient in eliminating their ability to reproduce. Disinfecting your water with Ultraviolet light is exceptionally simple, effective, and environmentally safe. UV systems destroy 99.99% of harmful microorganisms without adding chemicals or changing your water’s taste or odor. UV water purification is usually used with other forms of filtration such as reverse osmosis systems or carbon block filters.

Air Injection

Air injection, also known as aeration, is a treatment method to remove contaminants such as iron and hydrogen sulfide (rotten egg smell) from the water. Air is a powerful oxidizer and turns contaminants such as unfilterable ferrous iron and hydrogen sulfur into their more filter-friendly alternatives (ferric iron and elemental sulfur). Once these contaminants are removed from the water, it can easily pass through the next stage of filtering to remove other contaminants.

Aeration effectively addresses these contaminants:

Ozone Applications

Because of its excellent disinfection and oxidation qualities, ozone is widely used for drinking water treatment. Ozone can be added at several points throughout the treatment system, such as during pre-oxidation, intermediate oxidation or final disinfection. Usually, it is recommended to use ozone for pre-oxidation, before a sand filter or an active carbon filter (GAC). After ozonation, these filters can remove the remaining organic matter (important for final disinfection).

This combination has several benefits:
